Dracula star as 'Mortal Instruments' Valentine - TV After Dark

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, slated to portray the most popular vampire of all time in the new NBC series “Dracula“, has another seriously evil character headed to the big screen in book to film adaptation of “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.”

In the movie based on Cassandra Clare’s New York Times bestselling novel, Rhys Meyers plays Valentine Morgenstern, a charismatic yet insane Shadowhunter (a half human, half angel also known as Nephilim) who is hell bent on ridding the world of Downworlders (a faction composed of vampires, werewolves, warlocks, etc.). Clary Fray (Lily Collins) meets a mysterious guy named Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower, Twilight) after witnessing something supernatural at a teen night club. After her mom gets kidnapped, Clary relies on Jace and the rest of the demon fighting Shadowhunters, including the brother and sister team of Alec (Kevin Zegers) and Isabelle Lightwood (Jemima West) and their tudor Hodge Starkweather (Jared Harris) from the New York Institute, to help her unravel the mystery of her disappearance.

This role is perfect for the ridiculously talented JRM, who played the power hungry and serial widower King of England Henry the VIII on The Tudors. Valentine is similar to Henry in that he has an air of a well cultured, sophisticated gentleman with a completely inflated sense of entitlement. On the flip side of Valentine’s personality is his deep seeded hatred of those not like himself. He has moments of sadistic rage and vengeance that wields the fury waiting those who try to stand in his way.

Look for Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the rest of TMI cast when it hits theaters August 23, 2013.
