2012 was the year of Jennifer Lawrence. Not only was The Hunger Games a runaway success that currently holds as the 13th highest-grossing film of all time in domestic box office records, but her dark comedy Silver Linings Playbook debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September to immediate praise from both critics and the audience. Her role as Tiffany in Silver Linings Playbook is also the reason why 2013 is already shaping up to be an even bigger year for Jennifer, and one need only take a look at this year’s Awards Season lineup for proof.
The awards circle hit the road in fall 2012, with Jennifer being part of virtually every best actress nominees list in the country (and beyond). She got nods from Film Critics Associations everywhere from San Diego to New York, from Vancouver to the Dallas-Forth Worth area, and across the pond to London. She was nominated for both the Gotham and the Dorian Awards. Many of these she didn’t win, but it was a big indicative that she has now left her mark in the business.
In December, the awards started rolling in. She tied with Emanuelle Riva (Amour) for the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards on the 9th, and this was followed by top honors from critics in Las Vegas, Detroit, Kansas City and Austin. She tied with Helen Hunt (The Sessions) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) for the Nevada and Utah Film Critics Association Awards, respectively, as well as taking the top prize from the Southeastern Film Critics Association. On December 16th, she was named Best Actress in a Motion Picture at the International Press Association’s Satellite Awards.
Jennifer’s winning streak continued picking up momentum after the holidays. As early as the first two weeks of January 2013, she had earned awards from film critics in Central Ohio, Houston, North Texas and Denver. She didn’t win Best Actress at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ Awards, but she was included in their pick for Best Ensemble Cast. Similarly, she missed out on the top award at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on January 10th, but she took home statuettes for Best Actress in a Comedy and Best Acting Ensemble.
That very same day, the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards were announced: Jennifer was confirmed to be, for the second time in three years, in the running for a Best Actress Oscar.
On January 13th, she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (she beat Meryl!). This was followed by awards from Film Critics Associations in North Carolina and Georgia. On January 26th, she earned the Best Actress award from the Australian Academy (AACTA), and the next night, she received a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award, which she was particularly proud of as it was voted on by her peers. On February 2nd, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival named her Outstanding Performer of the Year for her work in both Silver Linings Playbook and The Hunger Games.
Now, with only a few ceremonies left until Awards Season comes to a close, it’s looking like Jennifer might just end it with a bang. The British Academy (BAFTA) Awards will take place on February 10th, the Independent Spirit Awards on the 23rd, and of course the Academy Awards will air live on the 24th. She is nominated for Best Actress in all three of them.
