New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof has spent the past ten years focusing on the oppression of women—that's the reason we chose him as one of this year's select group of remarkable global citizens, a group we call the 2012 Visionaries. In 2009, he co-authored the book Half the Sky, with Sheryl WuDunn, which tells heart-wrenching, grisly stories of female exploitation, sex trafficking, slavery, and death. Now their book has become a movement—a worldwide effort to raise awareness and overcome gender-based violence. One part of that movement is a documentary based on the book, airing tonight and tomorrow night on PBS, which features not only Kristof himself, but several other of this year's Condé Nast Traveler Visionaries, too.
